INTERIOR design is no walk in the park, but one expert has shared three decor choices that are not helping your cause.

She explained that many people are unaware they make your home look "cheap."

Hannah Prescott, an interior designer at Diamond Interiors, shared tips and tricks on home design.

While fake plants can save you time and money, she explained that a homeowner also loses a lot of charm by taking the easy way out.

"Low-maintenance indoor plants—like snake plants or prayer plants—can provide the greenery you want without the hassle," she said.

"Tending to real plants can be a rewarding activity that connects you more deeply with your living environment.”

Worse, she added, is the addition of word signs.

"Word signs can often come across as impersonal and generic, acting more as space fillers than true expressions of your personality," she said.

She recommended opting for art with sentimental significance instead.

“Instead, consider decorating your walls with artwork that holds personal significance," she said.

"Whether it's your children's drawings, cherished family photos, or travel memorabilia, these pieces add character and become conversation starters, making your home uniquely yours. 

“Art reflects individual taste and experiences, and incorporating these pieces into your décor ensures your home feels authentic and inviting.

"This approach also allows for a more dynamic and engaging visual experience than mass-produced word signs."

Prescott explained that execution is the key to any difficult design choice.

She revealed that it is often difficult to pull off an accent wall.

"While accent walls can add a focal point to a room, they can also create a sense of imbalance if not executed thoughtfully," she said.

“By extending the design elements to other walls or even the ceiling and carefully selecting furniture that grounds the space, you can achieve a cohesive and well-balanced room design.

"An accent wall should improve the overall aesthetic, not dominate it."

She urged homeowners to consider their space heavily to increase their chances of a thought-out wall.

"Think about how colors and textures on the accent wall can be echoed subtly throughout the room to create a unified look," she said.

"Proper balance in a room’s design promotes harmony and makes the space more comfortable and visually appealing.

"Soft furnishings, such as cushions, throws, and curtains, can play a crucial role in this."
