There have been a number of great players who have played for both Liverpool and Newcastle United over the years.

Reds legends John Barnes, Kevin Keegan and James Milner are just three of the clubs’ shared double-agents, while Terry McDermott, Alan Kennedy, Peter Beardsley and Gini Wijnaldum all made direct moves from St. James’ Park to Anfield.

Former Everton star Anthony Gordon could potentially follow in such iconic footsteps in the future, after reports over the weekend revealed that the Magpies had approached Liverpool regarding a possible transfer for the England international.

They had been racing to raise funds in time to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules before the June 30 deadline at the time. However, such a transfer failed to materialise when Newcastle asked for Jarell Quansah as part of the deal.

With Newcastle raising the desired funds elsewhere, it remains to be seen if such a move could be revisited before the transfer window closes on August 30.

Reds legend Didi Hamann is another player who directly traded Newcastle for Liverpool in his own playing days. And while he thinks Gordon would be a brilliant signing for Arne Slot’s side, he concedes it would now be difficult to persuade the Magpies to sell up.

“I think that Anthony Gordon would be a brilliant signing for Liverpool,” he told Gambling Zone. “I think he said somewhere, I'm not 100% on this, but I think he said his boyhood club was Liverpool and he was waxing lyrical about Steven Gerrard.

“He's a brilliant player. Obviously, he had a hard time when he first came to Newcastle. There were a few issues with the manager and with the fans, but he won them over, which is not an easy thing to do in Newcastle and the north east.

“I think it would be a great signing. Whether or not they can do it is a different matter, because I don’t think Newcastle would want to let him go.

“There's a lot happening at Newcastle at the moment, so, obviously you need to see with financial fair play and how that’s going to be implemented. Where Newcastle can go in terms of challenging the biggest clubs in the league and how much will they be able to spend over the next few windows?

“I would say that there's more chance of winning major trophies at Liverpool, but the gap is probably not as big as it was five or so years ago, especially since the new money has come into the club.”
