Fee Hike: University Of Ibadan Invites Activist, Femi Adeyeye, Two Other Students For Questioning Over Protests

The management of the University of Ibadan (UI) has invited a human rights activist, Femi Adeyeye and two other student activists, Aduwo Ayodele and Nice Linus, for questioning over the protest against school fee increment at the school.

The university management had also issued letters of query to the student activists with the threat of expelling them. 

SaharaReporters learnt that the students, the University pencilled their names down for victimisation were Aduwo Ayedele, a 200 level student of the Department of History, Faculty of Arts and Olamide Ghadegesin lyanuoluwa, a 700 level student of the Department of Institute of African Studies.

Other students are, Nice Linus, Adeyeye Oluwafemi, whom the authorities described as an unknown person.

On Tuesday, the invitation sent to the students as a text message, which was seen by SaharaReporters, asked them to appear before a committee at the school's Student Affairs Conference Room on July 2.

The invitation signed by one Halimah O. Adeoye read, “You are invited to appear before the committee on jointly committed offenses on the allegation earlier leveled against you bothering on misconduct.

“Date: Tuesday 2 July, 2024; Time: 9:30am; Venue: Student Affairs Conference Room.

“Be formally dressed and punctual. Kindly acknowledge the receipt of this message.”

In April, SaharaReporters reported that the UI Students’ Union Executive Council, led by Samuel Samson Tobiloba, had condemned the hike in tuition by 750 per cent for new students.

The Council demanded that the increment should immediately be reverted to the status quo and requested a meeting with the university management towards resolving this issue.

The students’ union leadership made its position known following the reflection of the recent increment on the students’ portal.

In a special release, the union observed that the new fees range from N133,500 to N372,500, depending on the courses.
