Ifedayo Agoro, popularly known as Ife and the founder of the online community Diary of a Naija Girl (DANG), has revealed that she called off her engagement just two months before her wedding.

She made this bold decision because she did not want to get married for the wrong reasons.

Ife shared her experience in response to a post on the social media platform X, where a user mentioned that it’s acceptable to break off an engagement if doubts arise.

Ife disclosed that despite having paid for the hall, a popular comedian, and her wedding dress, she chose to cancel the wedding.

She explained that returning the Aso Ebi money was part of her decision to ensure she did not enter a marriage for the wrong reasons.

“Broke off my engagement two months to the wedding. Hall paid for, popular comedian paid for. Part payment for popular musician paid for.

“Vera Wang wedding dress paid for. Broke things off without thinking of all that and returned everybody’s Aso Ebi money.

“I was getting married for the wrong reasons and I just couldn’t continue. I made one of the best decisions of my life,” Ife wrote on the X App.

She acknowledged that it was a difficult period in her life but insisted that taking the bold step was necessary to avoid future regret.

When a fan asked what she perceived as the wrong reasons for marriage, Ife explained that societal pressure played a significant role.

She felt compelled to marry before turning 30, a notion that she later realised was unfounded.

“Because I was going to clock age 30 and I don’t know who put it in my head that I had to be married at that time or it would be socially unacceptable to be unmarried at 30.

“When I complained to an older friend that it did not seem right because not only was I not in love but I had no rest in my spirit.

“I didn’t fall in love inside the marriage but to never let 30 pass me by. So I stayed, despite the fact that he was a pathological liar and extremely untrustworthy,” she added.
