BULLS GAP, Tenn. (WJHL) — Holston Electric Cooperative commissioned a new 4.8-megawatt power generation plant in Bulls Gap on Friday morning.

According to the utility, the generator is the first ethane-to-power generation plant in the country. It is located at the NGL Supply fractionation facility and is fueled by excess ethane gas from the facility.

Holston Electric says the new generator will result in power cost savings, stronger reliability, and reduced carbon emissions.

“Being a part of this idea and transforming it into a reality for our community makes working for the people and membership worth every moment,” said Jimmy Sandlin, Holston Electric Cooperative General Manager. “Taking advantage of a tremendous opportunity that exists in our service area will allow Holston Electric to essentially recycle the ethane waste by converting the ethane to power. This new source of power will be used daily when turning on appliances, lights, and devices in homes.”

Holston Electric plans to install three more generating stations at the site by the end of the year. Combined, the generating units will produce enough power to supply more than 3,600 Holston Electric customers, according to the utility.

Holston Electric distributes Tennessee Valley Authority power to more than 32,000 customers in Hawkins and Hamblen counties.
