The Los Angeles Dodgers made multiple roster moves before Friday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers, including recalling Gus Varland from Triple-A Oklahoma City and optioning Nick Ramirez.

Ramirez returns to the Minor Leagues one day after joining the roster in effort to provide some relief for a taxed Dodgers bullpen. Ramirez pitched two innings in their blowout loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on the Fourth of July.

Michael Petersen was sent to OKC as the corresponding move to Ramirez’s latest stay.

The left-hander has a 6.35 ERA and 1.85 WHIP in seven appearances across five separate stints with the Dodgers this season. Ramirez has now been optioned five this season, which is the maximum allowed for one year under the MLB collective bargaining agreement (CBA).

If the Dodgers were to recall Ramirez another time this year, he would have to remain on their active roster. The only options to remove him at that point would be if a stint on the injured list was required or Ramirez otherwise would need to be designated for assignment.

The Dodgers originally acquired Ramirez from the New York Yankees in exchange for cash considerations. That came days after the Yankees DFA’d Ramirez.

Gus Varland back with Dodgers

Varland is on the Dodgers roster for a third time this season. However, he hadn’t been with the team since the middle of May.

He’s appeared in seven games thus far, pitching to a 3.00 ERA and 1.83 WHIP. While with the Oklahoma City Baseball Club, Varland is 2-1 with a 7.48 ERA and 1.59 WHIP in 24 games (one start).

He last pitched for OKC on Tuesday, throwing 1.2 innings.
