Added frequency called for on standing-room-only 836 Express

County Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez is pleased that the 836 Metro Bus express route “has become a popular bus route attracting choice riders,” as he said in a resolution submitted to the commission Tuesday, but it’s become so popular it is “often exceeding seating capacity, with many riders having to stand during the entirety of the route.”

Metrobus 836 Express route provides critical express weekday east-west corridor service, traveling from the Dolphin Station Park and Ride to Downtown Miami along State Road 836.

It has limited stops, as is the goal of an express route. It stops at the Overtown/Lyric Theatre Metrorail station, Brightline MiamiCentral station, Wilkie D. Ferguson Jr. Metromover station, Government Center Metrorail/Metromover station, and the Downtown Metrobus terminal.

The route, Mr. Bermudez says in his resolution, “is intended to offer the riding public a safe, comfortable, and convenient transportation choice connecting to major employment and educational areas and reducing traffic congestion.”

Since express routes have limited stops, the resolution states, a rider who doesn’t have a seat may have to stand for extended periods.

The 836 Express has 40-minute “headways,” a measure of the frequency of service provided on the route. The route’s headways used to be shorter, the resolution notes.

The resolution, passed unanimously by the commission, asks the county to implement a plan “to eliminate any overcrowding … including adjusting the number and frequency of buses that service the route.”
