President Bola Tinubu has praised the Ibadan monarchy’s stability and conflict-free succession model, highlighting it as an example from which Nigeria can learn. Tinubu made these remarks during the coronation ceremony of the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, which took place at the historic Mapo Hall in Ibadan on Friday. Governor Seyi Makinde officiated the ceremony.

Represented by Minister of Power Chief Adebayo Adelabu, President Tinubu lauded the enduring tradition and resilience of the Ibadan monarchy, emphasizing its unique and stable succession route, which has been in place since 1851.

Tinubu expressed his hopes for the new Olubadan, praying for wisdom, guidance, and strength for Oba Olakulehin to lead the people of Ibadan with fairness, justice, and compassion. He stated, “What we are celebrating today is not just the ascension of Kabiyesi Olakulehin but the enduring tradition and resilience of the Ibadan monarchy.”

The president noted that the Ibadan kingship model is a beacon of stability and a valuable lesson for the entire country, emphasizing the importance of the office and responsibility. He expressed pride in being part of the celebration and confidence in Oba Olakulehin’s ability to uphold the traditions and values that have made Ibadan a symbol of resilience and progress.

Acknowledging future challenges, Tinubu called for cooperation among all chiefs, sons and daughters of Ibadan, and residents to build a brighter future for the city and the nation.

The coronation ceremony was attended by a massive number of residents of Ibadan and numerous dignitaries, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi; Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar; Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State; and Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, among others.

Governor Seyi Makinde emphasized the resilience of the Ibadan people and their focus on unity in his remarks. He highlighted that the coronation signifies the people’s determination to look beyond divisions.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, representing the 17 Southern governors, described the coronation as a significant milestone and the dawn of a new era in Ibadan land.

In his first address as Olubadan, Oba Olakulehin pledged to ensure continuous progress and development for Ibadan. He thanked the dignitaries who attended his coronation and acknowledged the traditional crowning rites he underwent before the ceremony.

The event saw various notable figures, including Oyo’s deputy speaker, Honourable Abiodun Fadeyi; Senator Sarafadeen Alli; federal lawmakers from Oyo State; and other prominent personalities and traditional rulers.
