3 lodgers die in Edo hotel mysterious fire

Three guests, including lovers, have reportedly died in a tragic hotel fire in Benin City, the Edo state capital.

The victims, two males, and a female were sleeping in their rooms on Sunday when the fire outbreak reportedly occurred at about 4am on the first floor of Cibeles Luxury Hotel, located at No.9, Emoavwodua Street, off Limit Road.

Blueprint gathered that the victims were said to have been suffocated by a dense smoke which billowed from its source and swirled to their rooms.

The smoke was said to have rendered the lodgers who were trapped in the rampaging fire unconscious.

Meanwhile, the Edo state Police Command spokesman, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, who confirmed the incident Monday said some suspects have been arrested.

The police spokesman gave the names of the victims as Bright Amechi, Michael Awowea and Cynthia Ogiugo, adding that investigation of the incident is ongoing.

Chidi also stated that a guest in one of the rooms the fire reportedly started and official of the hotel have made statements to the police.

 He said: “The DPO contacted the Edo State Fire Service, they came and extinguished the fire. Three persons were unconscious as a result of the suffocation from the smoke of the fire. 

“They were immediately rushed to Edo State Specialist, Sapele Road, Benin City, and the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), where one Bright Amaechi and Michael Awowe, were confirmed dead.

“While at Edo State Specialist Hospital, one Cynthia Oguigo was confirmed dead. The bodies were conveyed to Stella Obasanjo Hospital mortuary in Benin City.”
