At least 8 killed, dozens shot across Chicago in violent July Fourth

CHICAGO —July Fourth was a 24 hours across Chicago. At least eight people have been killed and over 40 hurt in separate shootings.

Among the incidents, eight people being shot in the Little Italy neighborhood overnight.

Police were called to 1300 block of West Hastings just after midnight for reports of multiple people shot.

According to witnesses there was an exchange of gunfire between two people.

Eight people were struck. Their ages range from 74 to 18. All are expected to survive.

A 16-year-old was wounded in a separate shooting in the 1200 block of South Central Park around 1:40 a.m.

Police said officers responded to an apartment complex and found the teen with a gun shot wound to the head.

She was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Additionally, a 43-year-old man was found shot in the 12oo block of West Washburne around 2 a.m. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Before midnight, a 59-year-old woman, a woman in her 40s and a 29-year-old woman were standing outside in the 900 block of North LeClaire when a person began shooting. The 59-year-old woman was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said. The 29-year-old was shot in the torso and is in fair condition. The woman in her 40s was shot in the head and hip and is in critical condition.

And early on the morning of July Fourth, two women and a child died following a shooting in Chicago’s Grand Crossing neighborhood.  46-year-old Nakeeshia Strong, and cousin, 24-year-old Caprice Edwards and an 8-year-old boy were killed when a group of people fired into a home in the 7100 block of South Woodlawn Avenue.

A 5-year-old and a 7-year-old remain in critical condition.

Family members said Edwards died while shielding her 1-year-old from the shooting.
