THERESA, New York (WWNY) - Allen Drake, a longtime member of the Jeferson County legislature, and retired teacher and coach in the Indian River Central School District, has died.

That’s according to a statement Friday from Troy Decker, Indian River Superintendent of Schools.

Drake had just joined the Indian River school board.

“Allen’s sudden departure has left us all in shock and sorrow,” Decker writes, “especially given the recent passing of his beloved grandson and IRHS student Jordan Drake fewer than two months ago.”

“He believed deeply in the power of education and the potential of every student (and adult) in our district,” Decker writes.

“His contributions have left an enduring mark on our School District and North Country, and he will be deeply missed.”

Drake was the county legislature’s lone Democrat when he left the legislature at the end of 2023.
