Dedicated helpers working hard in support of St Andrew’s Hospice tasted some special treatment in a joint celebration marking volunteers’ week and served up on national fish and chip day.

Coatbridge takeaway owner Hugh Innes brought his mobile van to the charity’s fundraising shop on Main Street in Coatbridge to dish up dozens of fish suppers for its team of volunteers.

They tucked into a lunchtime treat from the award-winning local chippie as a thank you for their “fantastic contribution” to the hospice and its work in caring for patients from across Lanarkshire.

Hugh, of Tony’s chip shop in Shawhead, brought along his mobile van and served up nearly 70 suppers for volunteers and retail team members whose fundraising work supports the Airdrie hospice.

They queued up outside the hospice shop on Main Street to enjoy the volunteers’ week treat in recognition of their “fantastic contribution” to the charity; with Hugh’s suppliers T Quality, Potatoes Direct and Pro-Fry also supporting the volunteers by donating products for the day.

It was arranged by Coatbridge shop manager George Thomson, who said: “We cannot thank our volunteers enough – it costs around £100,000 per week to provide specialist palliative care for patients and families in Lanarkshire and without volunteers, what we do at the hospice would be more difficult.”

Hugh said: “When George contacted us to see if we could help out, we wanted to do anything we could to give back to the community and help the hospice.

“We all know someone who has needed St Andrew’s Hospice and we try to raise funds where we can – we have a tin in the shop where customers will put in their change to donate, and we wanted to do what we could and get involved.”

He added: “We served up between 60 and 70 fish suppers, all cooked fresh on the day and which looked absolutely amazing! We’re pleased everyone enjoyed it and it was a nice day for everyone.”
