In recent weeks, the Imo State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police CP Aboki Danjuma, has made significant strides in the fight against crime, resulting in the arrest of over 125 suspects involved in various criminal activities. These activities range from kidnapping, armed robbery, child trafficking, and murder to the possession and distribution of firearms and illicit drugs. Notably, the police also rescued eight pregnant teenagers.
A major operation took place on June 27, 2024, when police raided a suspected drug hideout in Ofuzor Afor Egbu, Owerri North. This led to the arrest of Stanley Joseph Onyebuchi, 45, and Ngozi Joseph, 35, who were found with nine bags of cannabis sativa, crystal meth, and other drugs, along with a Toyota Sienna used for drug distribution. Three suspected buyers were also apprehended. The couple admitted to dealing drugs in a bid to quickly amass wealth.
On July 1, 2024, police responded to a tip-off and arrested eight suspects linked to armed robbery and rape at Nekede Road. They seized a locally made single-barrel shotgun during the operation. Earlier, on June 13, 2024, police apprehended Ogochukwu Favour David during a robbery on Bank Road, recovering a locally made revolver. Another suspect, James Ukeje, was arrested on June 27, 2024, with a pump-action rifle while attempting to steal a bus.
In a separate case, police uncovered a baby factory operating under the guise of an orphanage at World Bank, Owerri. Chukwudinma and Comfort Umunnakwe, who ran the facility, were arrested, and eight pregnant teenagers were rescued. The couple had been in the illicit business for over 12 years, coercing young women into giving up their newborns for money.
Additionally, on June 30, 2024, police raided a terrorist hideout in Umuapu, Ohaji/Egbema LGA, arresting several suspects and recovering firearms, ammunition, and assorted drugs. This raid was part of an ongoing effort to dismantle criminal networks in the area.
