A 26-year-old man was found dead in a hotel room in Delhi on Thursday morning, a few hours after he had checked in along with this companion who was later arrested by the Delhi police, officials said.

According to the police, the staff of the Bharat Stay Hotel in Mahipalpur found the deceased, Rohit Kumar, in the bathroom of his room.

Police said that the accused, Mandeep Singh, 32, who had checked in to the hotel room along with Rohit Kumar Singh, told the officials that he strangled the man to death

“Singh who owed Kumar Rs 50,000 told the police that the two men had come to Delhi to drop a passenger to the airport and he allegedly committed the murder to avoid repaying the debt,” said an officer.

The police team used technical surveillance to Singh, a driver from Punjab, and arrested him from Karol Bagh. They have also recovered Kumar’s car and personal belongings from him.

Analysis of call detail records and Fastag data associated with the car revealed that the vehicle had entered Delhi but had not exited, he added.

The police have registered a case under section 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

During the initial inquiry, the hotel staff said that Kumar had checked into the hotel around 1:30 am on July 4, accompanied by Singh who later left the hotel at around 3.20 am.

Both guests had provided their Aadhaar card as identification proofs when checking into the hotel, the police said, adding that Singh had previously worked in Saudi Arabia as a driver.
