Out of about 16,000 initial applicants to the U.S. Naval Academy this year, fewer than 1,500 were admitted into the Class of 2028 after a lengthy application process. Among them was Lowell native John Crabtree, who had long sought to join other members of his family in serving in the U.S. military.
