There was a time when Anil Ambani held the title of sixth-richest person in the world, surpassing his older brother, Mukesh Ambani. The year was 2008 and the chairman and managing director of Reliance Group (a.k.a. Reliance ADA Group) had a net worth that Forbes listed as $42 billion (Rs 350 crore now). Reliance Group itself was formed in 2006, following a demerger from Reliance Industries Limited, with Anil Ambani leading a number of stocks-listed corporations like Reliance Capital, Reliance Infrastructure, Reliance Power and Reliance Communications. He was credited with India’s largest IPO (Reliance Power), which was subscribed to in less than 60 seconds, and was also making waves in the entertainment space, having acquired a majority stake in Adlabs Films and signing a joint venture worth $1.2 billion with DreamWorks, Steven Spielberg's production company.

In February 2020, Anil Ambani declared bankruptcy. He was already engaged in a series of legal battles by then, and had declared his net worth to be zero after facing off on a number of liabilities. By December that year, the company had an outstanding debt of Rs 20,379.71 crore, a report by Reliance Capital Limited (RCL) had found.

However, things turned on its head once his sons, Jai Anmol and Jai Anshul Ambani, took over operations, with the siblings managing to (mostly) restore the company’s status and fortune. As a result of their efforts, Reliance Power’s stock price increased considerably and Japan's Nippon invested heavily in Reliance Capital.

Despite the setbacks he faced while running his business empire, Anil Ambani currently has a net worth of approximately $29.9 million (Rs 249 crore) according to The Times of India, and his company’s market value is worth Rs 10,759 crore, reports DNA. Anil Ambani, who married former Bollywood actress and philanthropist Tina Munim in 1991, enjoys a luxurious life, which includes owning a lavish 17-storey home in Mumbai’s posh Pali Hill area, a private jet worth Rs 311 crore, a fleet of uber-expensive cars and vacations in exotic locations. Here’s a closer look at their lavish life.
