Gor Mahia Coach Offers Valuable Advice to Young Goalkeeper Caleb Otieno Following Recent Standout Performances

Gor Mahia coach Johnathan McKinstry has offered advice to goalkeeper Caleb Otieno, who has received acclaim for his performances following Kevin Omondi’s suspension.

McKinstry counseled young goalkeeper Caleb Otieno to stay humble and focused if he aims to succeed at the club.

Otieno stepped into the spotlight after Gor Mahia’s first-choice goalkeeper, Kevin Omondi, received a red card during the Mashemeji Derby against AFC Leopards on April 21.

The 21-year-old was thrust into action in the 35th minute and showcased an impressive ability to claim aerial balls and bring calmness to the backline. His noteworthy performance continued in his first league start of the season against Murang’a Seal last Saturday, where Gor Mahia secured a 3-1 victory.

Following these successful outings, McKinstry believes that K’Ogalo has a significant talent in Otieno but emphasized the need for continuous effort to surpass the competition for a starting spot at the club.

“Caleb is someone we see every day in training. He’s young and has a substantial career ahead of him. While many teams are reluctant to field young goalkeepers, we are confident in his abilities,” McKinstry stated.

He added, “Goalkeeper coach Boniface Oluoch works with them daily. Caleb possesses enormous talent, but that doesn’t mean he can afford to relax; he must keep pushing. He performed some great saves, and towards the end [against Murang’a], he managed the game well, which isn’t something you typically expect from younger players. He’s going to develop, so there’s no pressure on him now.”

In addition to Omondi, Gor Mahia’s roster includes experienced goalkeeper Gad Mathews and young talent Dolf Junior Owino, highlighting the intense competition Otieno faces.

However, Otieno can find motivation in Omondi’s ascent to prominence after he became the club’s top choice over Mathews, who won the Golden Glove last season, before his 2023-24 campaign was marred by injuries and other off-field issues.
