Demonstrations in Paris follow preliminary election results ahead of 2024 Olympic, Paralympic Games

Store windows have become the target of demonstrators in Paris this week as tensions rise in the French capital after the right-wing National Rally (NR) party took the lead in preliminary election results.

The news comes less than four weeks away from the first events of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games which will be held across the city.

The New York Post reported the streets of Paris to be akin to a warzone this week after thousands of left-wing protestors stood in fiery opposition to the NR.

Marine Le Pen who fronts the NR took 33 per cent total of votes in the decisive first round of France’s legislative elections.

A united bloc of left-leaning parties operating as the New Popular Front pulled 28 per cent of votes while incumbent President Macron’s centrist party only saw 20 per cent of the nations support.

Footage posted online shows protestors launching projectiles and fireworks at police and smashing shop front windows in a sight that has become synonymous with Parisian protests.

Smartraveller yet to urge Australian’s to reconsider travel

As of 4 July, Smartraveller has France marked as a yellow degree of danger and has not told Australian travellers to reconsider plans to travel.

“France will hold national elections on 30 June and 7 July,” Smarttraveller reads.

“Demonstrations may occur around these dates, which could cause disruptions to transport and other public services. Avoid protests and demonstrations and follow the advice of local authorities (see ‘Safety’).

“France will host the Olympic and Paralympic Games between 26 July – 8 September. Travel delays are likely during this period.”

Smartraveller also reminds travellers that France’s national terrorist alert remains at the highest level.

“Expect high-level security measures nationwide, especially in venue cities, including schools, places of worship, shopping centres, and landmarks.”

If you are travelling to Paris or France, we recommend checking back in on SmartTraveller warnings prior to departure.
