Ohio killing suspect who walked free due to clerical error rearrested

CLEVELAND, Ohio: This week, U.S. marshals captured a suspect in a killing in the city who was released from jail because of a clerical error.

Amarion Sanders, 22, of Cleveland, was arrested during a morning traffic stop in the city.

The Cuyahoga County Corrections Center in Cleveland, where Sanders was being held on US$1 million bail, mistakenly released him on June 24. The jail let him walk out after charges were dismissed against a man in an unrelated case, and that defendant's court case number was somehow entered incorrectly.

Sanders is charged with aggravated murder in connection with a September 2023 shooting in Cleveland and his trial starts on August 19. He has maintained his innocence. His attorney did not respond to a request for comment.

The search for Sanders was led by the county, state and federal law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Service.
