Game of Thrones enthusiasts are buzzing with excitement as one of the show's actors has been cast in a significant new role on Netflix.

Jack Gleeson, who is recognised for his portrayal of Joffrey Baratheon in the popular fantasy series, has been confirmed for The Sandman season two - marking his most substantial role in years. Since his Game of Thrones tenure ended in 2014, the Irish actor has only taken on a handful of roles.

He has graced the stage in independent theatre, appeared in the 2020 BBC miniseries Out of Her Mind and the Irish thriller The Land of Saints and Sinners. Jack also had a brief cameo in the fourth season of Sex Education as Dodgy Mo.

He will now portray the malevolent hobgoblin Puck in the next chapter of The Sandman, based on Neil Gaiman's renowned graphic novel of the same name.

The first season of The Sandman, consisting of 11 episodes, was released in 2022. Executive produced by Allan Heinberg, it featured Tom Sturridge as Morpheus - or Dream - and Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Allan is returning for the show's second season, revealing to Netflix Tudum: "In the next chapter of The Sandman, the King of Dreams will come face-to-face - and go toe-to-toe - with the formidable rulers of Hell, Asgard, Faerie, and the realms beyond."

Netflix announced the new cast members for season two via social media. Sharing a photo of the nine new additions, they tweeted: "Ruairi O'Connor, Indya Moore, Ann Skelly, Douglas Booth, Freddie Fox, Laurence O'Fuarain, Clive Russell, Jack Gleeson, and Steve Coogan have officially joined the cast of The Sandman. Welcome to the Dreaming."

Viewers were overjoyed, particularly at the sight of former Game of Thrones star Jack in a big role. @fionavalsa exclaimed: "Jack Gleeson? Are you kidding? [shocked face emoji]" while @mercapocy screamed: "JACK GLEESON I COULD CRY".

@ananymous_mr sounded thrilled stating: "King Joffrey is back... Can't wait, he plays a great villain", and @MrsColgateTotal expressed her excitement by saying: "What a fantastic cast [ fire emoji] and there's Jack Gleason".

Also making a return to the series are some well-recognised faces, namely Patton Oswalt, Vivienne Acheampong, Gwendoline Christie, Jenna Coleman, Ferdinand Kingsley, Stephen Fry, Asim Chaudhry, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Vanesu Samunyai, and Razane Jammal.

The Sandman season one is available to stream now on Netflix.
