Amid Superhero Fatigue Netflix Drops Show With 100% Critic Score And Here's Why You Should Watch It

Supacell has become Netflix's next best. However, the show comes from the superhero genre which has not seen any serious success in recent years. Starring Tosin Cole, Nadine Mills, Eric Kofi-Abrefa, Calvin Demba and Josh Tedeku, the series has been created by British musician-turned-filmmaker Andrew Onwubolu, also known as Rapman.

While talking about the show he told Variety, that he'd 'always loved the superhero stuff', but having grown up in South London, the stories he saw in movies never 'reflected a reality' for him. That's where his own show comes in. The official synopsis of the series read, “In South London, a group of normal people suddenly develop superpowers, and the only apparent connection between them is that they are all Black; as they deal with the impact of their powers on their daily lives, one man must bring them together.”

The show is being praised for its storytelling and its social commentary. It follows five South London residents who develop superpowers overnight after an odd occurrence in the British capital. While the group is not directly connected they do have a history of sickle cell disease within their families. The worldbuilding of the show and its storytelling has also led to a perfect critic score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Like many UK shows, Supacell also has only six episodes so fans can easily binge it in a day or a weekend. While it did not debut at the top spot on Netflix, it has climbed up to the top spot in days. Released on June 27, the show first hit the 5th spot in the UK and rose to the top spot in days. However, currently, the show is on the global Top 10 chart of English language shows. The astonishing part is, the show is currently on the top spot amid other hit shows like Bridgerton season 3, Sweet Tooth and more.

The reviews praising the show have talked about the writing which blends satire and the traditional trappings of the superhero genre. Meanwhile is also being seen as a competitor for The Boys, which also follows another group of unconventional superheroes and explores the new genre of satirical superhero stories.

Meanwhile, Fans have deemed the show as a 10/10 and many are also asking for a season two. Another fan said, "Definitely need them to drop part 2 asap. if Netflix cancels this I’m deleting the app forever…"

A review of the show praised it saying, "Supacell, conversely, weaves those elements into its main narrative, keeping both the political commentary and worldbuilding intact without sacrificing other parts of the story. This allows Supacell to look at the story of power and its consequences in a new, grounded light while still adding fascinating elements to the basic stories of an ever-shifting genre."

The show streaming on Netflix is reportedly be renewed for a season two already.
