Ferrari launches a battery replacement scheme for its electrified powertrain sports cars to protect their long-term performance and residual values.

Recognizing that as lithium-ion batteries age and degrade, in terms of power output and range between charges, the automaker now offers owners of its hybrid vehicles two new warranty extension schemes to have their batteries replaced at given intervals.

The trial scheme is open to owners of SF90 Stradale, SF90 Spider, SF90 XX Stradale, SF90 XX Spider, 296 GTB and 296 GTS plug-in hybrid models.

Of course, it raises the question whether Ferrari will later extend the scheme to its upcoming battery-electric vehicle due next year.

The first scheme, called the Warranty Extension Hybrid program, extends the hybrid car’s existing five-year warranty up to eight years, at which point Ferrari will replace the high-voltage battery (HVB) pack at no extra cost.

There’s also the Power Hybrid program that offers owners an extended factory warranty on all major powertrain components, including those related to the hybrid system, from year 8 to year 16 and replaces the battery pack in year 16.

In a company release, Ferrari says: “Both programs guarantee clients that, in case of future developments in battery technology, the replacement HVB will be a new, state-of-the-art component that will ensure the same performance as the original one.”

The schemes cost around €7,000 ($7,530) a year, a source tells Reuters, adding they also will apply to Ferrari's BEV model. That raises the question of whether its battery pack will be easily swapped out without major chassis work.
