Mould can grow almost anywhere there is damp, including poorly ventilated bathrooms

No matter how meticulous you are about keeping your bathroom spotless, it's not uncommon for mould to crop up on the walls and ceilings.

This is typically due to the humid and warm environment, or insufficient ventilation. Mould can pose a serious health risk if you're exposed to it over extended periods. What's more, significant mould issues can be quite expensive to rectify if professional help is required.

However, homeowners have been advised that a simple change could help eradicate mould in the bathroom - and it's all related to towel storage. Peter Clayton from Trade Plumbing is urging homeowners to store wet towels properly in the bathroom, or face a potential £300 bill to tackle a mould problem.

Wet towels stored incorrectly can increase dampness in your bathroom, leading to unpleasant smells, harmful bacteria, and ultimately, mould growth. The expert points out that the common practice of stacking damp towels and leaving them to dry in non-ventilated areas is a major contributor to mould formation.

Instead, he recommends storing towels in a ventilated area, spread out on towel rails to prevent damp from escalating and causing mould. Wet towels hung or piled together hinder airflow, preventing the towels from drying and releasing excess moisture into the air, reports the Express.

Without adequate ventilation, Peter explains that the persistent dampness in the bathroom can lead to mould formation, which could cost up to £300 to have professionally removed. Mould isn't just an eyesore - it's a potential health risk too. Exposure to mould can lead to respiratory illnesses and infections, and it can exacerbate existing conditions like asthma.

Peter said: "Mould is a major concern within the home, and storing towels incorrectly plays a big part in its formation. Taking a couple of minutes out of your day to store them properly can result in a safer, cleaner environment, and will keep your towels in optimum condition."
