Baldur’s Gate 3 has a lot of items. Like, a lot. An exact count of unique items in the game is hard to calculate, but there currently appear to be nearly a thousand different items in Baldur’s Gate 3, including armor, weapons, scrolls, potions and books.

In a game stuffed with as many secrets and surprises as Baldur’s Gate 3, there’s a high probability that you will miss certain rare items with unique abilities, like legendary armor or powerful weapons. But equally easy to miss are the...stranger items. Here’s to the items that made us confused, shocked or just laugh out loud upon discovering them (and possibly have no use other than to harm the player).

11 Salami

The only weapon in the game that can be used as Camp Supplies, the Salami is a light club weapon that can be dual-wielded without special training. Not many Dungeons & Dragons campaigns will feature a full stat-breakdown for a weapon made out of cured meat, but Baldur’s Gate 3 just knew that somebody was going to try it.

Whacking enemies with the Salami, while admittedly funny, is probably not a wise move due to its low damage output and lack of unique abilities. But if you’re looking to craft a new meat-based build for your character, the Salami can be easily found across all three acts of the game.

10 (Myrna’s) Dog Collar

There's no shame in it

Dog Collars can be found throughout the world of Baldur’s Gate 3, but only one of them has a special use. This Dog Collar found in the Underdark’s Arcane Tower can be equipped and used to activate a special mechanism created by the owner of the original wearer (a dog named Myrna).

On the third floor of the Arcane Tower, if you press a seemingly-useless button while wearing the collar, a piece of Raw Steak will be dispensed on the ground. If you’re feeling a different kind of “adventurous,” you can find the Dog Collar and dispenser in Act I.

9 Bag of Moulding

Are you gonna eat that?

In Act III, players will come across a carnival barker named Akabi, who runs a (rigged) game called the “Wheel of Fortune.” Players that spin the wheel can get a plethora of strange items, including the Bag of Moulding.

Playing the Dark Urge as faithfully evil as you can allows you to unlock the Slayer Form easily, although it can be quite the time commitment.

The Bag of Moulding is a common container that, simply put, infects any food that is put into it with mold. No other container in the game has a transmutation feature like this, and there's no positive use for such a device in any way, making it a uniquely strange item for players to add to their collections in Act III.

8 Comeback Handaxe

Another one of Akabi’s (less) fortunate prizes is the Comeback Handaxe, an uncommon simple melee weapon that can be wielded in one hand and thrown. What makes the Comeback Handaxe special is that when it’s thrown, the axe will return back to its owner after hitting its target.

What makes the Comeback Handaxe less special is that when the axe returns to the player, it hits them for the axe’s thrown damage. Few weapons have the potential for self-inflicting damage that the Comeback Handaxe does, not to mention the fact that it’s worth 1 gp (a full 15 gold pieces less than a normal common handaxe).

7 Spider Egg Sac

An eight-legged miracle

There are plenty of throwables and grenades in Baldur’s Gate 3, but none as unique (and we’ll be the first to say it: icky) as the Spider Egg Sac. Not to be confused with the Web bomb, this single-use consumable can only be found in a singular spider nest in Act I just outside of the grove.

What happens when the Spider Egg Sac is thrown? It spawns five friendly crag spiders under your control to battle with you (or just follow you around). This one is a shock to unknowing players that throw it during combat, but also a welcome one (as long as you aren’t arachnophobic) thanks to their ability to bite for 1 piercing damage + 1d4 poison damage.

6 Unlucky Thieves Gloves

They know you're on the naughty list

Akabi’s prizes from his Wheel of Fortune get weirder and weirder, with the Unlucky Thieves Gloves nearing the top of the list. While these uncommon gloves do grant the wearer +2 to Sleight of Hand checks, they also add a piece of charcoal to their inventory for each stolen item.

If a player steals a total of twenty items, they will be granted a Coal Bucket instead of a piece of Charcoal, which immediately inflicts the Burning condition on the player for a one-turn duration. The gloves are part stealth build, part Easter egg referencing Santa Claus, and all ridiculous.

5 Gale’s Pouch

A gift from beyond the grave

Losing a companion can be an emotional moment for any adventurer. But if that companion is human wizard Gale Dekarios, the initial shock of losing a beloved party member will quickly be cut short by an apparition appearing from his body, instructing the player to loot his corpse for the Gale’s Pouch item.

Focusing on area-based damage, this build leverages the Evocation subclass to unleash devastating spells while ensuring the safety of allies.

This container can be opened via dialogue and only contains a flute, along with a scroll instructing you to play the notes “D-E-A-D” near Gale’s body. Upon playing the notes, a Magma Mephit will appear and will grant you a Scroll of True Resurrection upon handing it Gale’s letter and saying "K'ha'ssji'trach'ash". Needless to say, the events that follow mere moments after obtaining Gale’s Pouch are completely unpredictable.

The strangest of Akabi’s circus prizes are the Boots of Very Fast Blinking. They're a pair of uncommon boots that grant the wearer the ability to cast the level 2 spell Misty Step.

What’s the catch? Upon using Misty Step, all of your equipped clothing and armor will be left on the ground at the location you originally cast it at, teleporting you away wearing nothing but your underwear. Players will have to travel back to the original spot they teleported from to retrieve their items or alternatively just strip down to their delicates before using Misty Step.

3 Iron Flask

This really needs a warning label

The only story item on the list is the Iron Flask, a dark and glowing object that can be inspected or thrown. With no indication of what happens when thrown, players are left to their own devices to decide when the proper time to throw the flask has arisen.

Upon throwing the Iron Flask, a Spectator that is hostile towards all nearby creatures (including yourself) will be released, joining the initiative order in an eruption of chaos. The level of panic was extreme when one of our party members threw this in the middle of a street in Baldur’s Gate, triggering an unexpected mini-boss battle before we had the chance to rest.

2 The Hag’s Potions

In Act I, upon defeating the Hag, you walk through to the end of an Overgrown Tunnel to find her workshop, containing ten uniquely-named potions with zero description of their uses or effects. All of them are available to be stored in the player’s inventory, but it’s up to them to gamble with the possible powers of the potions.

Most of them have negative effects, such as Lover’s Avarice (which reduces the consumer’s Wisdom by 1 until their next long rest) or Insanity’s Kiss (which makes the affected creature hostile to all other creatures for five turns). But a couple of them are actually beneficial, like A Mother’s Loathing, which allows the consumer to use the Bite attack until their next long turn.

Shovel, The Unhinged

At the top of our list is the Scroll of Summon Quasit, which can only be found in one of the caskets in the easy-to-miss Apothecary’s Cellar in Act I. The scroll allows the user to cast Find Familiar: Cheeky Quasit once (although you can learn to cast it again through dialogue or scroll studying).

Using the scroll summons a strange familiar named Shovel, a bloodthirsty Quasit that obeys your orders and has a number of dialogue options, unlike other familiars. Some fun facts about Shovel: she can be permanently renamed to either Fork or Basket, she loves dragons and Dragonborn characters, she exclusively speaks in the third person, and she’s afraid of wild magic sorcerers.
