Many students at the university of Ilọrin on Saturday lamented the harrowing experience over water and electricity problems facing them on campus.
It was gathered, is coming weeks to the forthcoming exams, raising concerns among parents and guardians.
Both the private and school hostels are affected by the development.
One of the affected students called on the management to resolve the issues as soon as possible.
“I just hope things can return to normal on campus. There is no light, no water, and exams are approaching. This is not the time to be dealing with these issues.
“Many students are leaving on campus because of this, as they need to study for their upcoming exams. What about the students who have nowhere else to go off campus? How are they expected to study for their exams? I haven’t experienced a semester like this since I entered this school,” she said.
Another student described the situation as worrisome, adding that the non-availability of water and power has led to very poor hygiene.
Also, Ode, a student in one of the science departments, told our correspondent that the problem got worse after the new tarrif by the electricity company serving the school which shot its bill up to over N250 million monthly.
A parent, who has two children in one of the private hostels, said the situation was very bad that students buy sachet (pure) water to bathe.
“The private hostels are not monitored at all. Imagine a hostel that houses 700 students with just one tap and no student is allowed to fetch more than a bucket of water”, she lamented.
Asked what the union is doing about the situation in a telephone chat on Saturday, president of the Student Union Government (SUG), University of Ilọrin, Ologundudu Joseph Adesunkanmi said, “We are working on it. I am currently in the presence of the Vice Chancellor. Maybe we can talk later when I am through.
The university’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, said he would find our about situation.
However, an official said, “Our Vice Chancellor is student friendly, and indeed, a lot of proactive measures are ongoing to address the current issues of precarious power supply in the entire university to the satisfaction of all”.
