Here’s to Super Kai Havertz, April’s Finest

Kai Havertz’s arrival at Arsenal was met with mixed emotions, bearing in mind that his form in the tail end of his Chelsea career left a lot to be desired. Many fans also bemoaned the transfer fee of £65m paid to the West London outfit, postulating that his acquisition wasn’t certainly value for money.

Crowd favorite, Grant Xhaka, had just departed for the new exciting project with Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen, after providing his best goalscoring returns in all his time at the club, so Havertz had some big boots to fill and boy, did he struggle. Game in, game out, Havertz failed to find that confidence and consistency that he needed to win the fans over, and his first Arsenal goal was gifted to him via a spot kick at Bournemouth.

Sometime in November, he scored for Germany in the international break, then the goals started flowing, the late winner against Brentford, part of the scoring act in the decimation of RC Lens, a vital goal in the last gasp win over Luton Town, the match clincher against Brighton.

Gabriel Jesus injury issues also afforded him the chance to play more games as a center forward, and that’s when the goals started flowing in with reckless abandon. A goal in the 5-0 away thrashing of Burnley, a goal and assist against Newcastle, a goal and assist in the 6-0 trouncing of Sheffield United, the last minute winner at home to Brentford.

Havertz continued his fine form in the month of April, starting with an assist in the narrow home win over Luton, and he followed it up with a goal and an assist in the 3-0 away win over Brighton. His last two games for the club have seen him score a brace against his former side, Chelsea, as well as a goal and an assist in the North London Derby, earning him a nomination for the April 2024 Premier League Player of the Month award, alongside Bruno Fernandes, Josko Gvardiol, Jean-Philippe Mateta, Cole Palmer and Jordan Pickford.

Despite being stacked against stiff opposition for the prestigious award, Havertz is undoubtedly Arsenal’s most in-form player, which is a stark contrast from the man that joined last summer. His stock has risen so high to the point that the Arsenal hierarchy is contemplating selling Gabriel Jesus.

I’m proud of what Kai Havertz has achieved this season, and I hope it will all culminate to Arsenal winning the Premier League.
