ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A man has been convicted of shooting and killing his roommate in a dispute over a gun, the DeKalb County District Attorney said.

The district attorney’s office said Zakariya Wildman, 25, shot and killed Kali Winston, 28, on Jan. 12, 2023.

According to the district attorney, Wildman had bought a gun earlier that day and shot targets in the backyard of a home on the the 1400 block of Meadowlark Drive. The district attorney said, “Neighbors, concerned for the children who live and go to school in the neighborhood, were upset by the gunshots.”

Winston confronted Wildman about the gun and the confrontation turned into a physical fight before they were separated by other roommates. Winston got a black eye during the fight.

Wildman then took the gun and shot Winston in the chest.

He was convicted of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and sentenced to life in prison.
