Christel House, an independent school located in Ottery, Cape Town, has achieved recognition as a top 10 finalist for the World’s Best School Prize in the category of 'Overcoming Adversity'. This accolade acknowledges the school's exceptional efforts in providing education to learners from disadvantaged backgrounds amidst challenging circumstances.

Founded by Christel DeHaan, a German American philanthropist, Christel House serves students from Grades R through 12. The school's mission focuses on breaking the cycle of poverty, empowering children to realize their aspirations, and fostering self-sufficiency within society.

Many of Christel House's learners confront severe challenges such as gang violence, substance abuse, hunger, and abuse on a daily basis, yet they persevere to attend school and pursue their education.

David Maynier, Western Cape MEC for Education, extended congratulations to Christel House for its achievement as a finalist in the World’s Best Schools competition for 2024. He commended the school for its outstanding support of learners from economically disadvantaged communities, emphasizing its selection in the 'Overcoming Adversity' category as particularly fitting.

The World’s Best School Prizes recognize exemplary educational institutions globally across categories including Community Collaboration, Environmental Action, Innovation, Overcoming Adversity, and Supporting Healthy Lives. Finalists are evaluated by a distinguished judging academy comprising academics, educators, NGOs, social entrepreneurs, government officials, civil society representatives, and private sector leaders. Winners receive a share of a $50,000 award and gain a platform to showcase their best practices for replication worldwide.

Christel House now awaits the announcement of the top three finalists in September, hoping to secure further recognition on the global stage for its impactful work in education and community upliftment.
