DC's A.I. is Amanda Waller’s Most Powerful Weapon
The following contains major spoilers for Absolute Power #1, on sale now from DC Comics.
The DC Universe's greatest heroes have just lost their powers to the deadly A.I. behind Amanda Waller's brand-new army.
As the heroes of the world scramble to take on a host of threats all across the globe in the pages of Absolute Power #1, it quickly becomes clear that they aren't in for any sort of ordinary fight. Rather than facing off against familiar foes, the likes of Superman and Wonder Woman are now staring down seven superpowered Amazo androids. And, while older Amazos have always had the ability to copy the powers of others, Waller's new agent, Oliver Queen, explains that these updated Failsafe models are capable of stealing them away entirely.
One of the most popular Batman villains of all time has just been resurrected by the undying menace who knows it better than anyone.
While DC's original, pre-Crisis iteration of Amazo first appeared in the pages of 1960's The Brave and the Bold #30 by Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky, the character has undergone several major updates since then. A creation of the evil scientist Professor Ivo, the Amazo android and its subsequent versions have often posed a serious threat to heroes such as the members of the Justice League. Thanks to their ability to replicate the powers of anyone in their immediate vicinity, Amazos are often one of the most taxing villains the DC Universe has to offer, even if they rarely take center stage as they have today.
The Amazos of today are a far cry from those that came before them, largely thanks to the efforts of Batman's own repurposed Amazo android - Failsafe. This updated, impossibly cunning android was created from the remains of the most recent Amazo to threaten the Justice League, which was repurposed by Batman's twisted Zur-En-Arrh persona into a literal fail safe to stand in the Dark Knight's way should he ever go rogue. Failsafe soon went to war with the Batman Family, only to suffer a devastating defeat before taking up arms with Amanda Waller.
Batman's decades of cultivating his reputation as one of the most capable heroes in the DC Universe might just get him killed.
Based on his own schematics, Failsafe helped Waller to craft six other versions of itself, each of which has targeted and stolen the powers of a specific hero. As such, Superman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, and Aquaman have all been stripped of their abilities. Waller has also managed to shut down and capture Cyborg, leaving Batman and his fellow heroes without one of their most capable allies.
