The North Eastern states continued to battle the impact of incessant rainfall and subsequent floods even as several rivers were reported to be flowing above the danger level on Tuesday. States such as Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram continue to be on high alert.

The flood situation in Assam worsened on Tuesday with 11.34 lakh people being affected across  28 districts even as the death toll rose to 38. Twelve fishermen who had been stranded on a riverine island in Assam’s Dibrugarh since Friday because of the flood situation were airlifted with the help of IAF helicopters on Tuesday.

Two people in Tinsukia district lost their lives, taking the toll of this year’s floods in Assam up to 38. Since large areas of the state — especially the Upper Assam region — have been reeling under severe floods after days of heavy rainfall, the state disaster management authorities had to requisition helicopters from the IAF for two rescue operations, with boats unable to reach stranded people because of the swelling water levels. The 12 people were stranded in Hatia Ali, a riverine island in the middle of  Brahmaputra river. Disaster struck Mizoram on Tuesday, where heavy rainfall triggered landslides. In Aizawl, three members of a family died in a landslide.

In Manipur, major rivers such as the Imphal, Thoubal, Iril were reported to be flowing above the danger level. The state has declared holidays in educational institutions for two days. This is the second major flood the state is experiencing in less than a month, and so far, one death has been reported and another person is missing in Senapati district. Majority of the rivers and their tributaries in Arunachal Pradesh are flowing above the danger level on Tuesday.
