Is Kalki 2898 AD good or is the bar really low after bad experiences with flop magnum-opuses?

Kalki 2898 AD has finally been released and it is getting rave reviews from fans and critics.

People are lauding the film’s graphics, Amitabh Bachchan’s powerful screen presence and Nag Ashwin’s vision, but the real question is — is Kalki 2898 AD really that good or is it just our poor experience with big budget films that ha sset the bar really low?

In the past year, we have seen Adipurush, Ganapath, and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, which were helmed on massive budgets of Rs 600 crore, Rs 300 crore, and Rs 350 crore respectively.

I am comparing these films because they were supposed to be magnum-opuses and dealt with genres including live action historical sagas, sci-fi dystopias, and high-octane action.

But all of these films disappointed us because of their poor VFX and bad execution.

Especially with Adipurush, it was the biggest Indian film before Kalki 2898 AD but failed miserably.

The major criticism faced by Kalki 2898 AD is about its first half and the needless comedy by Prabhas’ character.

The action is definitely topnotch, but is it enough to justify a 3 hour 1 minute story?

And the answer is, YES!

Kalki 2898 AD might be facing criticism due to its boring first half, but this film is a stepping stone towards new-age sci-fi thrillers and the success of this film will surely send a clear message to the filmmakers and production houses to attempt futuristic films, but with a strong source material.

I still think that the plot and Amitabh Bachchan are the two main heroes of Kalki 2898 AD and if other elements catch more eyeballs than the main lead, even though he is the biggest pan-India star, then it is clear that people are ready for quality content rather than fan service.

I am excited to explore more stories in the Kalki’s Universe, but only if Nag Ashwin prefers his story throughout the film, rather than Prabhas’ fan service.
