The Mississippi River at Lock and Dam 15, Rock Island, is forecast to crest at 20 feet Saturday night into Sunday.

From there, it is expected to begin to slowly recede, Meteorologist Matt Friedlein with the National Weather Service, Davenport, said Tuesday.

Thunderstorms and showers that were to pass through the Quad-City region were not expected to substantially affect the crest, provided more rain than expected did not fall, he said. Forecasters attempted to account for the storms in their flood forecast calculations.

“The crest on the Mississippi is going to be drawn out from the Quad-Cities southward,” Friedlein said. “It will be multiple days.”

The Mississippi River at Rock Island stood at 17.86 feet at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Major flood stage is 18 feet.

The city of Davenport has installed HESCO barriers in the downtown area like this one at River Drive and Main Streets on Tuesday.

The storms moving through Tuesday night were expected to pass relatively quickly while dropping a lot of rain as they went, Friedlein said. The system was forecast to move a bit slower farther south.

Rain and storms remain in the forecast for Thursday and Friday for areas north of the Quad-Cities. In Red Wing, Minnesota, which is located along the Mississippi River, the forecast calls for the possibility of showers and thunderstorms that could have the potential to produce upwards of 3 inches of rain if the system comes together just right, according to the National Weather Service.

How much rain actually falls in that system will determine the impact on the Mississippi River crest locally.

The forecast for the Quad-Cities for Wednesday calls for a 10% chance of early morning showers and then clearing with a high of 86. There is a 20% chance of rain during the overnight hours into the Fourth of July holiday with an overnight low of 68 degrees.

For Independence Day, the forecast calls for a 40% chance of rain during the day with a high of 82 degrees. Rain chances increase to 70% during the nighttime hours with an overnight low of 66.

Friday’s forecast calls for sunny skies and a high of 77 degrees with an overnight low into Saturday of 62 degrees.

Davenport Assistant City Administrator and Public Works Director Nicole Gleason says a storm sewer project at Marquette Street and River Drive will be paused until flood waters recede.
