Arsenal seriously considered making a move to sign Marcus Rashford this summer, but one thing put Mikel Arteta off the Manchester United star.

Arsenal are on the lookout for players who can bolster their attacking contingent in this summer transfer window.

The Gunners are in need of a new goalscorer. Mikel Arteta has already considered plenty of potential targets who he could add to his ranks in this part of the pitch.

Arsenal made a move to sign Benjamin Sesko, but were snubbed by the Slovenian when he opted to pen a new deal with RB Leipzig.

Arsenal are now working on a deal for Viktor Gyokeres. The Sweden international was in prolific form for Sporting last season, and it would seem that Arteta is convinced that he can successfully translate his qualities from the Portuguese top flight to the Premier League.

However, before arriving at this potential solution to the Gunners’ striking woes, the North London club cast their eye over Marcus Rashford

Why Arsenal turned their back on chance to prise Marcus Rashford away from Manchester United

Rashford has just endured a difficult season at Old Trafford. In 43 matches, across all competitions, he managed just 8 goals and 5 assists.

This return pales in comparison with the numbers he racked up in the previous campaign, when he scored 30 goals and chipped in with 10 assists over the course of 56 outings for the Red Devils.

This dip in form has cost Rashford on the international stage too, as the 26-year-old was not named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024.

The 60-cap international currently looks short on confidence and in desperate need of a fresh start. This is something that might have been provided by Arsenal, but Arteta turned down the chance to pursue the player’s signature.

According to GiveMeSport: “Arsenal have held discussions about Rashford, who is on a contract worth £300,000-per-week in his current surroundings, but decided not to pursue a deal.”

It would seem, then, that the Manchester United star’s vast wage package, as much as anything else, put the Gunners off.

Rashford misses out on chance to emulate Kai Havertz at Arsenal

Based on the aforementioned salary details, signing Rashford on the same wages as he currently earns would instantly make him the highest earner at the Emirates Stadium.

He would eclipse Kai Havertz, and Rashford would perhaps also find that he has plenty in common with the German, were they to ever share a dressing room at Arsenal.

The former Chelsea man arrived in North London last summer bereft of confidence and struggling in front of goal. Havertz has rediscovered his best form under the guidance of Arteta though, and Rashford, in another version of events, may have found himself benefitting in the same manner from working under the Spanish coach next season.
