A 32-year-old man convicted of murder died after he was found hanged at a maximum-security prison in Hong Kong, the Correctional Services Department said on Monday.

The man was discovered by a correctional officer inside his cell at Stanley Prison at 8.44pm on Sunday.

“The person in custody had committed suicide by hanging with a bedsheet tied to the window grille bars of his cell,” the department said.

The officer immediately called for reinforcement to provide first aid and called for an ambulance to send the man to a public hospital, it added.

The man was subsequently certified dead at 10.06pm.

The case has been reported to police and the department said a death inquest would be held by the Coroner’s Court.

According to the department, the deceased was convicted of the offence of murder in February last year.
