Arsenal are closing in on their first signing of the summer transfer window, according to a journalist.

The North Londoners have been pretty quiet in the market so far but there’s been plenty of rumours floating around.

Clearly, Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu Gaspar have been keeping close tabs on a number of players at Euro 2024 as they look to assemble a title-winning squad.

With that said, they could be about to sign a player who starred at Euro 2024.

Arsenal close to signing Riccardo Calafiori

According to Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri, Arsenal are now close to signing Italy and Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori.

Calafiori, labelled as ‘world class’ per XValue, has impressed many at the Euros and as such, he’s attracted interest from a number of Premier League clubs including Chelsea, Newcastle and West Ham.

Though, it looks as though it’s Arsenal who have stolen the march on his signature and fended off stiff competition – with Juventus also one of the interested parties.

A fee at this stage has not been confirmed but it’s likely to be in excess of £40m.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Arsenal were really keen to sign a left-footed defender this summer.

“I expect many movements. It depends on what kind of opportunities there will be, but a left-footed defender is something that Arsenal want to bring in and will probably bring in this summer,” Romano said.

“This is one of the priorities.”

Calafiori fits that description to a tee, so it’s hardly surprising that they have moved so quickly to sign him.

More updates are expected to surface on this deal in the coming hours but all the early indications point to the fact that Arsenal have their man and what a coup it is.
