Phil Foden names who he thinks is the ‘best player in the Premier League’, it’s not Bukayo Saka
Phil Foden has given his verdict on who the best player in the Premier League is, with the Manchester City star not naming Bukayo Saka.
The two England internationals were last season two of the most productive players in the English top-flight, with Foden scoring 19 goals and registering eight assists whilst Saka managed 16 goals and nine assists in the Premier League.
With City winning the title, though, Foden’s claim to being the best player in the Premier League can be understood given how influential the Stockport-born forward was for Pep Guardiola’s side, as Saka and Arsenal fell short by just two points.
And Foden has now given his verdict on who was the best player in the Premier League last season.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Foden named himself as the best player in the Premier League, though the winger highlighted that he hasn’t been impressed with his form this summer at the Euros with England.
With Saka impressing for the Three Lions, Foden’s form has come into question in recent weeks, yet the City star still backs himself as the best player in the Premier League after his impressive form for City last season.
Foden said: “I’ve been a bit frustrated, I’m not going to lie [at Euro 2024]. I want to try and score, try and do better things for England and at times it’s not worked out but it’s about keeping a good mentality.
“I’ve not been the best player in the Premier League to come here and not show it. I feel like every game I’m moving little steps forward and hopefully I can put in good performances for England, that’s always been my aim.”
We live in a world where comparing player A to player B has become a toxic debate rather than a healthy conversation, a factor largely caused by social media, making topics such as Foden claiming he’s the best in the Premier League tedious to even listen to when fans finally get word.
And whilst a case could be made for why Foden isn’t the best in the Premier League, Arsenal fans might find it hard to shoot down such an idea given just how good the City star was last season and how vital he was for Guardiola in winning the title.
That’s not to say Saka isn’t world-class, though, with the Arsenal winger enjoying his best year ever and likely to only improve in the new season, where the forward could claim Foden’s crown as the best in the league.
