The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) has asserted that a referendum led by Nnamdi Kanu’s Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) would likely result in failure, citing the prevailing preference among Igbo people to remain part of Nigeria rather than secede.

Yerima Shettima, National President of AYCF, expressed this viewpoint to DAILY POST, criticizing what he perceives as the infiltration of the Biafra movement by criminal elements. He acknowledged, however, that some Igbos advocate for fairness, equity, and justice.

Shettima stated, “From my perspective as a Nigerian, IPOB would not win a referendum today because the majority of Igbo people wish to maintain Nigerian citizenship. Their primary demands revolve around justice, equity, and fair treatment.”

He continued, “If a referendum were conducted in Southeast Nigeria today, I am confident that the majority would vote to remain Nigerians. There are only a few individuals within the region pushing for secession for personal reasons.”

Shettima highlighted concerns about intimidation preventing widespread vocal support for secessionist views among Igbos. He added, “While the Biafran sentiment is vocal, the ultimate decision would likely favor Nigeria due to the majority stance.”

Nnamdi Kanu, currently detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) since his extradition from Kenya in June 2021, has continued to advocate for Biafra despite legal challenges and government opposition.
