With Fantastic Beasts 4 no longer happening, the story of Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander was left incomplete, but he can still make one more appearance in the world of Harry Potter without Fantastic Beasts. The world of Harry Potter didn’t stop when Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 was released, as it continued to expand with other media, including a new trilogy of movies. Unfortunately, the Fantastic Beasts branch couldn’t replicate the success and quality of the Harry Potter saga, and it couldn’t fulfill its five-movie plan.

Based on the complementary book Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, written in-universe by magizoologist Newt Scamander, the movie was released in 2016 and was directed by David Yates. Fantastic Beasts starred Eddie Redmayne as Newt, and though the movies in this branch were supposed to follow his travels and work as a magizoologist, they shifted their focus to the conflict between a young Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald. The underperformance of the third movie and many behind-the-scenes controversies led to the end of Fantastic Beasts, but Newt can still make one more appearance in another Harry Potter project.

Eddie Redmayne Could Cameo As Newt Scamander In HBO's Harry Potter TV Show

The Harry Potter TV Show Brings New Opportunities

Although Newt Scamander was still part of the stories of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, the focus went to Dumbledore and Grindelwald, leaving Newt aside. The Fantastic Beasts movie series could have corrected its course and given Newt the attention he deserved in the following movies, but Secrets of Dumbledore became the final movie. The original idea for Fantastic Beasts was to cover five movies, but the many issues behind the scenes and the failure of Secrets of Dumbledore ended those plans.

However, the end of Fantastic Beasts doesn’t have to be the end for Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander, and he could show up in the upcoming Harry Potter TV show. The Wizarding World is now expanding with a TV show covering the stories in the Harry Potter books, so it’s the best chance to adapt characters, scenes, and storylines that the movies had to leave behind. Now, Newt Scamander didn’t appear in the Harry Potter saga, but Harry and company use his textbook.

Newt Scamander only appeared briefly in a portrait in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets .

Newt’s Fantastic Beasts book is part of Hogwarts’ program, so Harry, Hermione, Ron, and the rest know who Newt is and are familiar with his works. Redmayne doesn’t have to have a proper role in the Harry Potter TV series to make a cameo appearance, as he could appear in a flashback, in a photo on the back of the book, or the show could use a voiceover of him reading his book while the students use it.

An Eddie Redmayne Cameo Would Allow Harry Potter To Give Him A Proper Send-Off

Fantastic Beasts Failed Newt Scamander

As mentioned above, the Fantastic Beasts saga ended up being incomplete, and at this point, it’s highly unlikely that a fourth movie will happen. Unfortunately, this means that Newt’s story was left hanging, and he definitely deserved better, especially after how the Fantastic Beasts movies changed and turned him into a secondary main character. Even if Redmayne’s Newt doesn’t have a proper role in the Harry Potter TV series, just seeing him one more time could be the goodbye the character deserves.

Another way to give Redmayne’s Newt Scamander a proper send-off in the Harry Potter TV series could be by acknowledging his legacy in the wizarding world, especially in Hogwarts and the students who use his book. Newt would be an unknown character for those who are only familiar with the Harry Potter movies as he wasn’t mentioned nor was his legacy explained, but the TV show can fix this.

One Small Harry Potter Detail Suggests An Older Newt Could Also Appear In The Show

There’s One Cool Way Newt Scamander Can Return

The Marauder's Map from Harry Potter

While it would be best for Eddie Redmayne’s version of Newt Scamander to appear in the Harry Potter TV show, there’s one detail in one of the movies that could bring Newt back, but much older. In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the Marauders Map was introduced, which showed every corner of the Hogwarts castle and the location of every person on the grounds. An Easter egg on the map is Newt’s name, proving that he was still around during the events of the Harry Potter saga.

One theory explains why Newt Scamander’s name appeared on the Marauder’s Map in Harry Potter 3, fitting with Newt’s interests and timeline.

This makes it possible for an older Newt to appear, even if briefly, in the Harry Potter TV show, though it’s hard to say if Eddie Redmayne could be the one to play him. Surely, the magic of makeup could turn him into a much older Newt Scamander (that if the show doesn’t want to get involved with the often controversial aging tech), but the character could also be recast for this cameo.

The Harry Potter TV show is one final chance to do justice to Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander after how the Fantastic Beasts movies failed him, but it’s to be seen if he will be given the opportunity or if the show will opt for including an older version of the character.
