A case has been registered against Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra for her social media comment on National Commission for Women (NCW) chief Rekha Sharma. The case relates to outraging the modesty of a woman. Moitra recently stoked controversy as allegedly she posted a derogatory reply to a video on X that showed Rekha Sharma arriving at the site of the Hathras stampede site with a person holding an umbrella over her head.

Soon after, NCW initiated legal action against Mahua Moitra for her remarks against Rekha Sharma. Interestingly, the TMC MP asked the Delhi Police to act immediately on the suo moto orders. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Moitra wrote, "Come on Delhi Police please take action immediately on these suo moto orders. Am in Nadia in case you need me in the next 3 days to make a quick arrest.” "I Can Hold My Umbrella,” she further added.

Commenting on the video, TMC MP Mahua Moitra wrote "She is too busy holding up her boss' pyjamas". Following her comment, NCW took suo moto cognizance of the derogatory remarks made by Moitra against NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma.

In a press release, the NCW said, “These crude remarks are not only outrageous but also a severe violation of a woman's right to dignity.” “Upon careful consideration, the Commission has determined that Moitra's remarks fall under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, 2023,” it added.

A letter was sent to the Lok Sabha Speaker at Parliament, which stated that the remarks made by Moitra, are condemnable in the strongest possible words and that being a Member of Parliament, it is unbecoming of her stature. The Women's rights commission has requested the Speaker to look into the matter and take appropriate action against Moitra.
