CLEARWATER BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) — This summer’s heat caught a few people at Clearwater Beach off guard.

“I think it is hotter than usual,” Jazmin Becerra said.

Becerra just left the store where she picked up sun screen and a bottle of water.

She, like others, were out enjoying the weather on Wednesday. Temperatures reached 88 degrees, but it felt like 96.

Max Defender 8 Meteorologist Rebecca Barry said it’s expected to get even hotter for the holiday.

“So the heat is going to be formidable on the Fourth of July,” she said. “We’re expecting to top out well into the mid 90s, especially over inland areas. And it’s really the humidity that gets people because your ‘feels like’ temperatures are going to be well into the triple digits.”

Paul Culligan is visiting from New York. We caught him sitting in the shade.

“It’s too hot,” Culligan said. “I was out there for about 20 minutes, dipped into the water. The water’s roasting. I’m catching shade just in case I burn.”

It’s his first time at Clearwater Beach, and described it as roasting.

One family from Canada said the heat is what brought them down.

“The beach, the sun, how hot it is, it’s really nice,” one family member said.

Barry said temperatures have been trending above average all week long. Beachgoers said they can tell.

“I like being in the sun. But when it’s like this kind of stay out of a little more. So you know, don’t get any heatstroke or anything like that,” Jesus Hernendez said.

Here are some signs of heat related illnesses: headache, dizziness, confusion, a fast pulse, hot, red or damp skin, and a high body temperature are signs of a heat stroke. Some signs of heat exhaustion are muscle cramps, feeling tire or weak, and fainting.

Those with any symptoms need to call 911 and move to a cooler place.
