Ezra Miller's The Flash can't seem to catch a win, whether in theaters or on streaming. After its release on Netflix, the failed superhero film failed to impress the users and scored low on the charts.

Per Netflix, The Flash barely made it into the Top 10 with 3.3 million views in its first week. The DCEU film found a new streaming home from Max to Netflix late last month, premiering on June 25. Although it initially looked like the film might end up becoming a success finally after debuting at No. 2 after its release, its overall results were disappointing.

The superhero film didn't overcome Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman's comedy release A Family Affair, which arrived on the platform several days after The Flash. It also scored lower than other newcomers like 1997's Kiss the Girls starring Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman, 2022's Marry Me starring Jennifer Lopez, and the first installment in the John Wick franchise.

The Flash is hardly a new film, as it premiered in June 2023. It's not even new on streaming services, as the film was previously available to stream on Warner Bros. Discovery's own platform, Max. However, the film held record-low numbers even on its parent platform, scoring merely 1.1 million in its first three days in the U.S.

Will The Flash 2 Ever Happen?

The Flash was a major disappointment at the box office, earning merely $266.5 million worldwide, with only $108.1 from the domestic market. Not even its home market performance helped, because the Blu-ray sales were estimated at another $2.3 million (via The Numbers), and it barely covered its $200 million budget. The film received a "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but just barely, holding a score of 63% from the critics out of 389 reviews, but 83% from the audience.

There were plans for a sequel to The Flash, and Aquaman's David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick penned a script in case the film did well in theaters. However, the superhero film's poor performance left the sequel in question. With DCU co-CEO James Gunn restarting the DC Universe with the upcoming Superman, The Flash 2's future was uncertain. As Variety reported in October 2023 that none of the actors cast by Zack Snyder would reprise their roles in the future of the DC universe, Ezra Miller's The Flash 2 doesn't seem to have an active part in Gunn and Peter Safran's plans.
