The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has launched a grassroots flood early warning system in Oyo State, guided by predictions from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA).

The initiative was introduced at the Ona-Ara Local Government Headquarters, bringing together local government officials, traditional leaders, and representatives from various associations. A representative for NEMA’s Director-General highlighted the necessity of proactive measures to address flood risks in Oyo State, which is expected to see flooding in 11 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in 2024. Nationwide, 31 states with 148 LGAs face high flood risks, while 35 states, including the Federal Capital Territory, with 249 LGAs, are at moderate risk.

Dr. Temitope Kollapo, Chairman of Ona Ara LGA, welcomed the initiative and committed to spreading the information within local communities. The event featured presentations in Yoruba to ensure clarity and included an interactive session for stakeholders to ask questions and provide feedback.

NEMA and SEMA officials also met with the Oyo State Governor’s office. The Deputy Governor, representing the Governor, assured support for the flood warning strategies and recommended broadening the program to address wind storms and market fires.
