“Don’t Allow Illicit Drugs Consumption Derail Your Dreams, Aspiration,” Akere Advises Youth

The Director of Projects, Association of African Professionals (APA), Nigeria Chapter, Mrs Olajumoke Akere has called on youth in Nigeria not to allow consumption of illicit drug derail their dreams and aspirations.

Akere, who is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Cherithpoint Education and Youth Development Initiative, gave the advice during a virtual lecture organised by APA to commemorate the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

She said that the Nigerian youths have a bright future full of potentials, urging them to make wise choices and not engage in things that would negatively affect their future.

Akere urged the youth to always seek help whenever they were going through any challenges and not to result to the use of drug.

“Seek help if you are struggling and know that there is a supportive community ready to assist you,” the director said.

She called on healthcare professionals and community leaders to continue to educate, support, and guide those under their care because their influence could make significant difference in steering individuals away from the path of drug abuse.

Akere further advised parents to be vigilant and observant of their children’s behavior, saying the family is the first line of defense against drug abuse.

“It is important to create an open and supportive environment where children feel comfortable discussing their challenges and experiences.”

“Regularly monitoring the children activities, understanding their social circles, and being aware of changes in behavior can help in early detection and intervention.” she said.

Akere called on parents to educate their children about the dangers of drug use and foster strong moral values being an essential steps in preventing drug abuse.

“Encourage your children to engage in healthy and productive activities and be role models in your communities,” the CEO said.

She commended the efforts of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other stakeholders in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking.

According to Akere, the fight against drug abuse is not for law enforcement agencies alone but a collaborative effort of all members of the society.

She, however, emphasised for stronger enforcement of existing laws and enactment of new policies in order to adequately address the evolving nature of the problem of drug.

Akere further said that the support of government was crucial for the rehabilitation of individuals affected by drug abuse.

According to her, effective rehabilitation programmes can transform lives and reintegrate individuals into society as productive members.

In his remarks, the APA President, Nigeria Chapter, Dr. Moshood Ismail Abioye, said the association was deeply committed to raising awareness about the devastating effects of drug abuse and the importance of combating illicit trafficking.

Abioye said that their goal was not only to educate and inform but also to inspire action and called on everyone to make impact in eradicating the menace of illicit drug abuse and trafficking in their communities.

The Oyo State NDLEA Commander, Yinka Joe- Fadile enumerated the dangers and consequences of drug abuse and interventions available.

In attendance at the programme are APA Vice President, Nigeria Chapter, Mr Bobola Agbeja, the NDLEA Public Relations Officer (PRO) in Oyo State, Mrs Mutiat Okwuobi among others.
