Ranking the WWE and AEW Matches of the Year Thus Far in 2024

bleacherreport.com 2 days ago

The year 2024 has already been another strong one for wrestling fans.

Stop me if you've heard this already, but we're arguably witnessing the best period of professional wrestling ever. It may not be as lucrative or popular as it was during WWE's Attitude Era, but the quality of matches is vastly superior.

More to point, we regularly have access to outstanding matchups from smaller companies, local independent promotions and foreign entities like New Japan, Stardom and AAA. That's on top of the wealth of great wrestling available in the U.S. thanks to All Elite Wrestling and WWE.

At any time, you can see a superb television or pay-per-view showcase from either of these two companies. This year has produced so many high-quality matches in the first six months that we're excited to see what's next.

Without further ado, this is our ranking of the top 10 AEW and WWE matches of 2024 so far.

    10. Sami Zayn vs. Gunther, WrestleMania 40 Night 1

Sami Zayn vs. Gunther was easily the best match on Night 1 of WrestleMania 40.

The two had to overcome a clunky build and many fans' hopes that Chad Gable would dethrone The Ring General, but they overdelivered in this excellent Intercontinental Championship contest.

Gunther's hubris ultimately became his undoing as he uncharacteristically gloated and taunted Zayn's wife before the Canadian mounted a comeback.

The storytelling here made this one of the best outings of the weekend and a fitting end to a dominant IC title run.

    9. Darby Allin vs. Konosuke Takeshita, AEW Dynamite, Jan. 3

Darby Allin and Konosuke Takeshita delivered an absolute banger during the first Dynamite of the year. This PPV-caliber matchup set the bar high as one of the best television matches of 2024 so far.

Allin is one of the most consistent performers on the AEW roster because he sells his opponent's offense so well and comeback spots are so convincing.

Nevertheless, Takeshita put him through the wringer and ultimately secured a much-needed win to start the year.

    8. Ilja Dragunov vs. Ricochet, WWE Raw, May 6

This year's King of the Ring tournament was phenomenal. The first round gave us another installment of Gunther and Sheamus' rivalry that could have made this list, but Ilja Dragunov vs. Ricochet stole the show.

The Mad Dragon's brutal offense and intensity make his matches so dynamic, and his clash of styles with Ricochet worked surprisingly well.

These two had great chemistry in this early highlight from an overall robust tournament.

    7. Adam Page vs. Swerve Strickland, AEW Dynamite, Feb. 7

Swerve Strickland will likely end up on many year-end lists after his highly anticipated match with Will Ospreay at Forbidden Door.

However, last year's feud with "Hangman" Adam Page elevated him into a main eventer.

He and Hangman revisited their heated rivalry earlier this year in the build to Revolution. It would've been impossible to top their Texas Deathmatch from Full Gear, but this was an incredible showing that effectively advanced their storyline ahead of the Triple Threat bout for the AEW World Championship.

    6. Mercedes Moné vs. Willow Nightingale, AEW Double or Nothing

After a two-month wait, Mercedes Moné's debut match with AEW lived up to the hype at Double or Nothing.

That shouldn't have come as much of a surprise because the Boston native has such an impressive resume of high-profile performances.

Willow Nightingale used her size and power to dominate early on, but The CEO hung on to become the new TBS champion.

The Anarchy In The Arena match closed the show with an outrageous spectacle and Strickland and Christian Cage exceeded expectations, but these two women proved they belonged in the triple main event.

    5. AJ Styles vs. Cody Rhodes, Backlash France

AJ Styles vs. Cody Rhodes was a worthy follow-up to The American Nightmare's Cinderella win at WrestleMania 40.

Even more, the LDLC Arena crowd in Lyon, France provided the perfect atmosphere for this first-time matchup.

Styles returned to form in one of his best showings in the past five years, while Rhodes proved he's a formidable champion and the rightful face of WWE in his first major defense.

    4. Darby Allin and Sting vs. Matthew Jackson and Nicholas Jackson, AEW Revolution

This may not be the most conventional or concise entry on this list, but Sting's retirement match will endure as one of the year's most memorable events.

AEW gave The Icon a tremendous sendoff in the building where he built his legacy: Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Matthew and Nicholas Jackson offered a perfect foil for him and Darby Allin and an appropriate final note for his run with the company.

In the end, Sting and his loyal protégé remained undefeated and retained the AEW World Tag Team Championship in a wildly entertaining main event.

    3. Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns, WrestleMania 40 Night 2

You won't find a much better ending and WrestleMania moment than Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns II. This match was a masterpiece.

It was a proper end to the most dominant reign of the modern era, a celebration of The Showcase of Immortals and a crowning achievement for the catalyst of the company's new era.

The surprise cameos, Seth Rollins' poignant character arc and Reigns' comeuppance in the final stretch capped off an unforgettable Night 2 main event.

    2. Konosuka Takeshita vs. Will Ospreay, AEW Revolution

Will Ospreay has been on an absolute tear for the past two years, so it shouldn't surprise anyone that two of his matches topped this list.

It's safe to assume that many of his best performances in 2024 will be match-of-the-year candidates.

In fact, The Aerial Assassin's first Dynamite match as a full-time member of the AEW roster with Kyle Fuller could easily make the cut.

However, his first AEW PPV match against Konosuke Takeshita at Revolution was a standout affair on an exceptional card.

    1. Bryan Danielson vs. Will Ospreay, AEW Dynasty

As of now, Bryan Danielson vs. Will Ospreay is the best match of the year, and it's hard to imagine anything will change that.

The storytelling and perfectly executed counters were top notch, and the finish left a lasting impact on the British star.

Danielson has had so many amazing matches since he joined AEW, but this was an instant classic.

The St Louis crowd remained fervent throughout, and two of the best wrestlers in the world gave them a show they will never forget.
