Marvel Exec Teases How Eyes of Wakanda’s 'Ties Directly Into the MCU'
Marvel Studios executive Brad Winderbaum has shared new details about its forthcoming Black Panther animated spinoff Eyes of Wakanda. The Disney+ series will be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s ongoing Phase Five.
Per Gamesradar+, on the latest episode of the official Marvel podcast, Winderbaum teased Eyes of Wakanda’s connection to the greater MCU, confirming that the series will take fans through different time periods of Wakanda’s history. "Eyes of Wakanda, more than any other show we're doing in animation, ties directly into the MCU," Winderbaum said. "This is a story about Wakandan history. It's produced by Ryan Coogler, it's directed by Todd Harris who is one of our longtime storyboard artists, who I first met when he designed the Hulk vs. Thor fight in Thor: Ragnarok."
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star Angela Bassett speaks out about her emotions after losing out on last year's Best Supporting Actress Oscar.
He continued, "It's an awesome show. The action's insane, the storytelling is fantastic. It's about the history of Wakanda, but it also expands into the greater MCU at different time periods. So if you're a fan of the movies, this is gonna be a real treat." Eyes of Wakanda was first announced in December 2023, after Harris pitched the show to Coogler and Feige. At the moment, it remains unclear if some of the Black Panther cast will be returning to voice their characters in the spinoff. The official logline for Eyes of Wakanda reads, "Throughout Wakandan history, brave warriors have been tasked to travel the world retrieving dangerous vibranium artifacts. This is their story."
Besides Eyes of Wakanda, Marvel Studios hasn’t made any announcements regarding the future of its Black Panther film franchise, following Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s theatrical run last 2022. However, in a recent interview, Shuri actor Letitia Wright seemingly confirmed that her character is still slated to return in future MCU projects. "There are a lot of things coming up," she teased. Wright’s Shuri was last seen by fans in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, in which she became the newest Black Panther following the death of her mother, Queen Ramonda. After defeating Namor, she visits Nakia in Haiti, where she learns about the existence of her nephew.
Newly-released concept art shows deleted scenes from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, featuring more action from Namor and Ironheart.
In addition to Eyes of Wakanda, Marvel Studios is also currently developing two more animated Disney shows, including Marvel Zombies and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. The former will have a TV-MA rating as it’s expected to feature multiple gruesome zombie kill sequences. "It's hardcore. People die. And they die rough," director Bryan Andrews said. "So, there's still some laughs to be found here and there. It's not completely all horrible… We might prop you up with some laughs and some humor and some good times, and then and then we take stuff away. So, it's pretty brutal. There's huge action. There's great emotion. There's drama. There's all of it."
Eyes of Wakanda is expected to debut sometime in 2024.
