State troopers: truck driver shouldn’t have been traveling route when he slammed into Medina County

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Several roads in Medina County remain closed after a truck with an oversized load hit a bridge last Friday.

State troopers found the truck driver shouldn’t have been traveling on that route.

The driver, Deshawn Johnson of Bryan, Texas, was charged with reckless operation, a permit violation and over dimension.

ODOT said the driver struck the Route 42 bridge over Greenwich Road.

No one was hurt, but their initial inspection showed significant damage to the bridge.

Ohio State Highway Patrol says Johnson was off his “ODOT approved permit travel route.”

We reached out to ODOT to learn more.

A spokesperson told us, “ODOT issues permits for these types of loads with approved routes to ensure they can pass under and over bridges safely based on height and weight restrictions.”

State troopers also found Johnson did not have a lead vehicle with a height sensing device.

According to ODOT’s escort requirements, vehicles more than 14 feet 6 inches traveling Ohio’s roads must have a vehicle driving in front of them with that device.

19 Investigates found Johnson operates his own trucking business out of Texas called Kindred Spirit Logistic LLC.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, they’ve had five inspections in the past two years and no crashes listed during that time period.

We reached out to Johnson by phone about Friday’s crash into the bridge.

He said “no comment.”

Ohio State Highway Patrol said the reckless operation charge is a minor misdemeanor.

If the driver is found guilty, he would get four points on his driver’s license and have to pay a fine.

We learned the other charges, oversized load and permit violations, are more often seen during commercial vehicle inspections by Motor Carrier Enforcement Inspectors.
