25 die in auto crash

NO fewer than 25 passengers have been confirmed dead by Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, as a trailer conveying 90 passengers, was yesterday, involved in lone accident. 

The trailer fell in Dangwaro flyover on Kano-Zaria Road.

This came three days after another trailer ran into worshippers, claiming 15 lives in Imawa town, Kura Local Government Area of Kano State on the Kano- Zaria Road.

The Kano Sector Commander of the FRSC, Ibrahim Abdullahi, who confirmed the incident, said no fewer than 53 other passengers sustained injuries while 12 others were rescued unhurt.

Abdullahi in a statement by his spokesperson, Abdullahi Labaran, attributed the accident involving the trailer (IVECO) with number plate, KMC 311 ZB, to over speeding, which resulted in the loss of control.

He warned drivers and motorists against the unsafe practice of transporting animals, goods and human beings concurrently, noting that such practices not only endanger lives but contravene traffic regulations designed to ensure road safety.

He said: “About 0330hrs on Monday, a fatal accident involving a trailer (IVECO) with number plate, KMC 311 ZB, occurred at Dangwaro flyover along Kano- Zaria Road.

“The crash involved 90 passengers, with devastating consequences. Twenty-five fatalities, 53 injured individuals, and 12 people rescued unhurt.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that the probable cause of the crash was over speeding and loss of control by the driver of the trailer.

“The FRSC promptly mobilised rescue operations in collaboration with the Nigeria Police and other emergency response agencies. During the rescue operation, items recovered included six motorcycles, 10 mobile phones, animals, rams and goats, maize, and the sum of N4,000. All recovered items are currently in police custody.

“All victims of the road traffic crash have been swiftly transported to Murtala Specialist Hospital, Kano for urgent medical attention.

“In response to this tragic incident, Sector Commander, Abdullahi warns drivers and motorists against the unsafe practice of transporting animals, goods, and human beings concurrently. Such practices not only endanger lives but also contravene traffic regulations designed to ensure road safety.

“The FRSC urges all road users to adhere strictly to traffic laws and regulations to prevent further tragedies on our roads.”
