Massive The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Overhaul Makes The Game Worth Revisiting
There's no question that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is already a massive game with a rich world to explore and a wealth of quests to embark upon. However, a free update may give players a major reason to revisit the Northern Realms almost a decade after its initial launch.
While players have already been able to mod The Witcher 3 since its launch, CD Projekt Red's official modding tool for the game, REDkit, has finally been added to Steam, and much like the version of REDkit for The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, it enables players to customize and expand the game as they see fit. The tool is currently only available on PC via Steam - although it is compatible with versions of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt purchased on other launchers such as Epic Games Store and GOG - and is completely free to those who already own the game.
The best mods for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt make the game more streamlined by simplifying certain tasks and cleaning up old gameplay mechanics.
The Witcher 3 REDkit was originally announced in November 2023, and offers players the same powerful tools as the CD Projekt Red developers who made the original game. This software intends to offer players the freedom to fully transform the acclaimed fantasy title into whatever their imagination conjures. Examples given are the ability to craft entirely new quests, items, weapons, and characters, or develop animations, entire storylines, and new territories to expand the scope of Geralt of Rivia's journey.
The REDkit Steam page does have a disclaimer that " achieving the full scope of development akin to the original creators may require access to external tools."
CD Projekt Red says that rather than REDkit being merely a game development tool, the studio sees it as a love letter to The Witcher's community with a wealth of community-driven features enabling players to easily share their ideas and inspire others. Currently, The Witcher 3 REDkit is only available for those who request access to a playtest, but the Steam page shows a planned release date of 2024, so a full version shouldn't be too far off.
Considering how popular The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings' version of REDkit was, it's great news that CD Projekt Red is releasing the powerful yet accessible tool for the highly acclaimed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Modding is a huge part of what keeps games alive on PC, allowing players to build upon the original creators' vision in a variety of different ways to both enhance the game's visuals and performance, expand open worlds, or think up some completely outlandish and bizarre crossovers - like introducing Thomas the Tank Engine into every game possible. Either way, it'll be interesting to see what the community has in store.
The Witcher 3 is the third major installment in the Witcher series. In this game, players once again take up the mantle of Geralt, a monster hunter who roams the open world taking on contracts. For this entry, the major plot follows the disappearance of Ciri, Geralt's ward, and his attempts to find her.
