The Lagos State Taskforce has taken decisive action against traffic obstruction and illegal street trading, impounding 45 vehicles and clearing traders from walkways across the state.

The operation, led by CSP Adetayo Akerele, targeted vehicles causing traffic congestion by dropping and picking up passengers at unauthorized bus stops and garages. The raid began early Thursday morning and covered areas including Oshodi, Ikeja, and Iyana Ipaja, where persistent commercial bus operators had been causing significant disruptions.

Akerele issued a stern warning to all commercial bus operators in the state: “There will be no sacred cows in this new dispensation. I do not care if your commercial bus is branded or marked with intimidating stickers to avoid arrest by law enforcement; if you cause an obstruction on the highway, your vehicle will be confiscated. Lagosians will not be shortchanged by any self-centered bus operator.”

In addition to addressing traffic issues, the Taskforce focused on street traders who have transformed walkways and kerbs into makeshift markets. The crackdown took place along Oshodi Road, Suwebatu Street, and the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, where traders were found violating state environmental laws by occupying pedestrian pathways.

Goods displayed along these roads were confiscated as part of the effort to restore order. Akerele emphasized the importance of keeping roads and highways free from degradation and unapproved commercial activities. He warned traders across the state to vacate unauthorized market spaces, highlighting the dangers posed to both the environment and public safety when pedestrians are forced to walk on highways due to blocked walkways.

“Engaging in such activities is not only harmful to the environment but also dangerous to traders and commuters,” Akerele stated. “We are committed to ensuring our roads and highways are free from any form of degradation or unapproved conversion to markets.”

All drivers of the impounded vehicles will face prosecution as part of the Taskforce’s ongoing efforts to enforce traffic regulations and maintain public order.

This initiative underscores the Lagos State Government’s dedication to improving traffic flow and ensuring safe and clean public spaces for all residents.
