'I became a grandmother at 36 - everyone makes the same mistake when meeting me'
One woman's life took a rather unexpected turn when she became a grandmother at just 36-years-old. However, Ana Washington says she loves being a young nan and wants her grandson to grow up in the 'best environment possible'
Becoming a grandmother in your thirties isn't common - but Ana Washington wouldn't have it any other way.
The licenced esthetician and business owner, now 37, has four children aged eight, 15, 16, and 20 - as well as four stepkids. In September 2022, she also welcomed her first grandchild, Zenith Lee Net.
From Phoenix in Arizona, US, the young gran first became a mother at just 16-years-old - and so knew she'd be referred to as nanny Ana before she turned grey and picked up a penchant for knitting. She says entering grandmotherhood was a 'crazy' experience as she still wanted more children herself - but those plans have changed now she looks after her 22-month-old grandson full-time.
"Life as a grandmother at 37 is a wonderful experience," Washington said. "I have the energy to be with my grandson and he makes me want to stay healthy so that I can be in his life for as long as I can.
"I have my grandson full-time so I don't have much time to go out or do anything. I also own my own business and have four children of my own so it is a busy, busy, life." But when out and about with Zenith, people always make the same assumption about Washington...
The young nan says she's always bombarded with comments from people telling her how cut her 'son' is. "Rather than explain that I'm his grandmother I just say 'Thank you'," she added.
Her and husband Trunnell wanted to make sure their grandchild gets all the love and cuddles, wanting him to be brought up in the 'best environment possible'. "My kiddos at home help care for Zenith so he has the most attention and can be pretty spoiled," she added.
